Die
Praxisbeispiele stellen einzelne Einsatzszenarien digitaler Medien in
sächsischen Hochschulen vor. Lehrende zeigen hierbei Vorteile auf und gehen
auch auf Herausforderungen ein. Die Kurz-Interviews sind dem Projekt „Neue
Lehr-Lernkulturen für digitalisierte Hochschulen“ entnommen. Projektlaufzeit:
The stated examples
of good practice show possibilities of implementing digital media in lectures of
higher academic institutions in Saxony. Herewith, teachers/ research assistants
tell about advantages of their experiences as well as difficulties they had to
deal with. All published interviews are taken from the project „New culture of teachings
and learning for digitalisation of higher academic institutions “. The project
ran form 09/2015 till 12/2016. Today´s post is about the tutorials produced by
Linda Heise.
Fragen an Frau Heise:
Wie sind die Videos in das Gesamtkonzept
Ihrer Lehrveranstaltung eingebunden?
Einsatz Ihrer Videos?

Digital teachings and learning in an academic context – example of good practice “tutorials”
Today´s
post is about the tutorials produced by Linda Heise. She is a research
assistant at the University of applied science in Mittweida and has designed
tutorials produced in a so-called laying technique that are three minutes long
and are to be used of her student´s online self-assessment. All videos were
provided within an OPAL course.
A short information about tutorials produced
with laying technique: For producing your tutorial by laying you don´t need to
use special software tools, only (self-made/ self-drawn) objects, which are to
be drawn, cut out and are laid down for every sequence of your film (according
to a designed script). A camera, situated right above the working area, is
filming the whole process, probably also your hand that is putting down the
different sequences. A speaker´s voice can be integrated afterwards. This example from e-teaching.org shows a short tutorial
about e-lectures made by laying.
Questions
to Linda Heise:
How did you integrate these tutorials into your
course? These
little films were part of a blended-learning concept and were used as
online-based self-assessment within a flipped-classroom model.
All films were provided in an OPAL course for the lecture with additional
learning material, like worksheets that had to be filled out by the students while
watching the videos. Herewith, we tried to activate our listeners as well as
giving them an introduction and an overview into the subject that is to be
shown in the film.
Which advantages do you see by using these
tutorials? The main
advantage in laying your films is the simple production method. You don´t need either
special software skills nor special hardware programs. Videos, in general,
offer the possibility to combine different types of showing (e.g. audio, moving
pictures and motionless ones) and illustrating processes that you want your
students to understand. For them it is an easier way of learning and you are
able to address them directly in the tutorial. Therefore, we have chosen two
characters, which have a two-way function: on the one hand the students might
identify themselves with these two and on the other hand they help them to get
through the course.
How long did it take to produce the tutorials? One tutorial that is three minutes
long took about 43 hours of work. But that included a screenplay, writing the
speaker´s text, drawing the figures, the actual shooting and cutting the film
as well as uploading it. Our whole team consisted of three people and half of
the time was used for drawing. If you take the elements that we drew from
already existing sources, e.g. the internet, you might be able to decrease your
time requirements but then you also have to keep an eye on the copyrights.
Which experiences did you make using the
tutorials? Within our evaluation of the course we found
out that students actually liked the tutorials and would like to have this
concept used more often. Besides this, we as the producing team would like to
emphasise on the importance of a good story that is to be told in the short
films. It is so worth to spend more time on the storytelling in advance as you
can perfectly us it for every single image.
